Radiation Protection for Non-Radiology Medical Practitioners and Hospital Personnel

A one day course in radiation safety will be held in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. This course is suitable for medical personnel working with ionising radiation. This includes doctors, nurses, health & safety personnel and staff with an interest in radiation safety.

There is a legal requirement (SI 478 (2002)) for non-radiology doctors who are working with ionising radiation to undergo training in radiation protection techniques. Full attendance at the course will satisfy the requirements of legislation and the Medical Council in this regard. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion of the course. The course has been approved by the Medical Council.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to ionising radiation
  • Biological effects and basic dosimetry
  • Principles of radiation protection and the regulatory system
  • Referral Criteria
  • Radiation protection in X-ray, nuclear medicine, theatres, ICU and interventional radiology
  • Radiation protection in pregnancy
  • Practical demonstration of radiation protection techniques
