SUMMARY:Radiation Protection Training Course
DESCRIPTION:The course will provide the theoretical background and training necessary for the radiological protection requirements of both ionising and non-ionising radiations used in hospitals. \nThe main four-day module covers the following subject areas: radiation risks\, dosimetry\, biological effects\, instrumentation\, legislation\, transport\, emergencies\, and safe practice in the medical uses of ionising radiations. \nAs well as lectures\, there will be small\, informal workshop sessions which will provide for a range of interests. An optional fifth day will be run on radiation protection issues around the medical use of non-ionising radiations. \nThe course is at a level suitable for hospital physicists working in the field of radiation protection or those who want to expand their knowledge in this field. It is particularly suitable for those who wish to become Radiation Protection Advisers (RPA) and covers the Basic Underpinning Knowledge (Basic Syllabus) as set out in Annex 3 of the HSE statement on Radiation Protection Advisers. \nThe course is accredited within the IPEM CPD scheme. \nA comprehensive course booklet and a certificate of attendance are provided. Those wishing to use the course towards RPA certification can sit an optional marked short exam. \nApplications from abroad are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:In April 2020 the conference Optimisation in X-ray and Molecular Imaging (OXMI 2020) is held in Gothenburg\, Sweden. The conference will cover a wide area of research related to optimisation of medical imaging and is intended for a broad audience of medical physicists\, radiologists\, nuclear medicine physicians\, engineers\, radiographers and biomedical scientists\, as well as representatives for authorities and manufacturers. The conference is the 5th in a series of scientific conferences focusing on optimisation of medical imaging\, with special emphasis on image quality evaluation and radiological protection. DESCRIPTION:Course 5 of the multi-course offerings by the ICR. See https://iapm.ie/event/physics-medical-imaging/ or the website below for additional information. \nThis longstanding course is designed to teach the scientific principles upon which nuclear medicine imaging is based. It gives an introduction to the underlying physics and radiochemistry principles which form the basis of nuclear medicine before delivering a set of detailed lectures covering all aspects of imaging. \nThe course is run over four days (Tuesday to Friday). Each day is designed to cover a particular theme. The first day primarily covers radionuclides and radiation protection; the second day focuses on gamma camera and SPECT imaging; the third day is dedicated to PET/CT imaging. The fourth day concentrates on individual patient dosimetry/treatment planning for molecular radiotherapy. \nThe course is intended to be useful for medical physicists in training and postgraduate students\, as well as more experienced professionals seeking to refresh or expand their knowledge in key areas. \nThe course assumes some familiarity with general principles of physics\, but no specific knowledge of nuclear medicine imaging is assumed.

SUMMARY:Radiation Protection Course for Non-Radiology Doctors and Healthcare Professionals (GUH)
DESCRIPTION:S.I. 256 2018 is concerned with the health protection of individuals against the dangers of ionising radiation in relation to medical exposures. Article 22.3 of S.I. 256 explicitly states that Practitioners and individuals to whom the practical aspects of medical radiological procedures are delegated to must have successfully completed training\, including theoretical knowledge and practical experience in medical radiological practices and radiation protection\, as prescribed by the Medical Council \nThis course will cover the material required in the legislation and is specifically aimed at nonradiologist doctors who may be directing investigations with ionising radiation. The course has been approved by the Faculty of Radiologists and is recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland. The names of attendees will be forwarded to the Medical Council for inclusion in their register. The Medical Council offers all course attendees who are on the general register of Medical Practitioners a certificate of attendance. SUMMARY:Radiation Protection for Non-Radiology Doctors and Hospital Personnel
DESCRIPTION:There is a legislative requirement under IRR 19\, Statutory Instrument No. 30 of 2019 and S.I. No. 256 of 2018 that staff members involved in the practical aspects of medical radiological procedures must have adequate radiation protection training. \n  \nAn approved training course has been organised by the Department of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering and Department of Radiology\, St. Vincent’s University Hospital. \n  \nThe course covers the production of X-rays\, the interaction of X-rays with tissue\, legislative requirements and radiation protection. A practical demonstration of protection techniques will be given in the Department of Radiology. \n  \nThe ½-day course will take place on Tuesday 21st January 2020 from 1pm to 4:45pm in the Education and Research Centre\, St. Vincent’s University Hospital. The course fee is €100 for non SVHG staff. \n  \nDoctors who attend the full course will be given certificates of attendance and their names will be forwarded to the Medical Council. \n  \nFind further details\, including location\, schedule and directions in the attached document.

SUMMARY:Physics of Medical Imaging - Course 1
DESCRIPTION:The course provides the necessary physics background that underpins day-to-day medical imaging physics activities. It is aimed primarily at new entrants to the profession\, but should be of benefit to postgraduate students\, postdoctoral research workers\, physicist-managers\, representatives of allied commercial organisations and anyone wishing to deepen or re-establish their understanding of the physics of medical imaging. \nThe faculty is composed mainly of physicists\, many of whom are internationally renowned for their expertise. A selection of key talks delivered by clinicians and other scientists provides the necessary broader scientific and clinical perspective. Overviews of specialised or research related topics\, such as positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance spectroscopy are given. \nThere are many opportunities for informal discussions and there will be visits to the Department of Nuclear Medicine\, Ultrasound and X-ray Computed Tomography and the MR Units of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and/or the research labs of The Institute of Cancer Research. \nThe course is given in four separate units. Each course is repeated annually. \nCourse 1 – The Magnetic Resonance Imaging & Spectroscopy course – is offered as a standalone training course\, run in conjunction with IPEM\, and for which CPD credits are available. SUMMARY:Radioactive Waste Advisers Training Course
DESCRIPTION:This course provides the theoretical background and training necessary for managing and giving advice on the use of sealed and unsealed radioactive sources in hospitals. \nThe three day-course covers all aspects of legislation and safe practice in the medical uses of radioactive substances. As well as lectures\, there will be workshop sessions which will help to reinforce the topics covered. \nThe course is at a level suitable for hospital physicists working in hospital radiation protection and is particularly suitable for those who wish to become Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA)\, and covers the Basic Underpinning Knowledge (Basic Syllabus) as set out in the RPA2000 Guidance. \nThe course is an IPEM approved external short course. \nA comprehensive course booklet and a certificate of attendance is provided. Those wishing to use the course towards RWA certification can sit an optional marked short exam. \nSee the event website for more details and application forms.

SUMMARY:ESMPE European School for Medical Physics Experts - Treatment Planning systems
DESCRIPTION:The EFOMP and COCIR (The European Coordination Committee of the Radiological\, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry) in collaboration with the Polish Society for Medical Physics (PSMP) would like to invite you to the next ESMPE in Radiotherapy 2019. The school will be aimed at advanced tasks connected with the use of Treatment Planning systems in radiotherapy planning. The school will cover the main physics aspects of the input data to treatment planning systems\, an overview of the main dose calculation approaches\, use of imaging in RT planning and delivery and future developments. This edition is jointly organized by EFOMP and COCIR. Lecturers identified by COCIR will give insides on the technical solution adopted by manufacturers in the relevant fields of dose calculation and optimization. This two-and-half day event will be accredited by EBAMP (European Board of Accreditation for Medical Physics) and is intended for practicing clinical Medical Physicists who are involved in radiotherapy treatment planning. As in last year’s school\, there will be an optional examination at the end for those seeking a higher level of certification beyond attendance.
