SUMMARY:Radiation Protection Course for Non-Radiology Doctors and Healthcare Professionals (GUH)
DESCRIPTION:S.I. 256 2018 is concerned with the health protection of individuals against the dangers of ionising radiation in relation to medical exposures. Article 22.3 of S.I. 256 explicitly states that Practitioners and individuals to whom the practical aspects of medical radiological procedures are delegated to must have successfully completed training\, including theoretical knowledge and practical experience in medical radiological practices and radiation protection\, as prescribed by the Medical Council \nThis course will cover the material required in the legislation and is specifically aimed at nonradiologist doctors who may be directing investigations with ionising radiation. The course has been approved by the Faculty of Radiologists and is recognised by the Medical Council of Ireland. The names of attendees will be forwarded to the Medical Council for inclusion in their register. The Medical Council offers all course attendees who are on the general register of Medical Practitioners a certificate of attendance. See www.medicalcouncil.ie for more information. \nThe course is also of considerable benefit to nurses and other healthcare professionals who encounter ionising radiation in the workplace and will give a good introduction to the issues involved in radiation protection. \nPlease see attached document for further information as well as a registration form. \nClick here for further details.

SUMMARY:Physics of Medical Imaging - Course 1
DESCRIPTION:The course provides the necessary physics background that underpins day-to-day medical imaging physics activities. It is aimed primarily at new entrants to the profession\, but should be of benefit to postgraduate students\, postdoctoral research workers\, physicist-managers\, representatives of allied commercial organisations and anyone wishing to deepen or re-establish their understanding of the physics of medical imaging. \nThe faculty is composed mainly of physicists\, many of whom are internationally renowned for their expertise. A selection of key talks delivered by clinicians and other scientists provides the necessary broader scientific and clinical perspective. Overviews of specialised or research related topics\, such as positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance spectroscopy are given. \nThere are many opportunities for informal discussions and there will be visits to the Department of Nuclear Medicine\, Ultrasound and X-ray Computed Tomography and the MR Units of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and/or the research labs of The Institute of Cancer Research. \nThe course is given in four separate units. Each course is repeated annually. \nCourse 1 – The Magnetic Resonance Imaging & Spectroscopy course – is offered as a standalone training course\, run in conjunction with IPEM\, and for which CPD credits are available. Rates for courses differ for IPEM members for this course. \n\nCourse 1 (11–13 November 2019)\nMagnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy. \n\nCourse 2 (27–29 November 2019)\nUltrasound Imaging. \nCourse 3 (11 February 2020)\nImage Theory\, Perception and Processing. \nCourse 4 (12–14 February 2020)\nDiagnostic Radiology and CT. \nCourse 5 (10–13 March 2020)\nNuclear Medicine. \nPlease see the flyer for additional information regarding the dates and locations of the different courses as well as for registration.

SUMMARY:Radioactive Waste Advisers Training Course
DESCRIPTION:This course provides the theoretical background and training necessary for managing and giving advice on the use of sealed and unsealed radioactive sources in hospitals. \nThe three day-course covers all aspects of legislation and safe practice in the medical uses of radioactive substances. As well as lectures\, there will be workshop sessions which will help to reinforce the topics covered. \nThe course is at a level suitable for hospital physicists working in hospital radiation protection and is particularly suitable for those who wish to become Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA)\, and covers the Basic Underpinning Knowledge (Basic Syllabus) as set out in the RPA2000 Guidance. \nThe course is an IPEM approved external short course. \nA comprehensive course booklet and a certificate of attendance is provided. Those wishing to use the course towards RWA certification can sit an optional marked short exam. \nSee the event website for more details and application forms.
